Indian Summer - Ny tur i 2012

Bli med på en fantastisk motorsykkel/biltur gjennom statene New Mexico, Colorado, Utah og Arizona i perioden 23. august til 3. september 2012. Vår guide, Morten Nilssen, bor i Taos, New Mexico, og har lagt opp denne turen. Han er utflyttet nordmann og har bodd i Taos siden 1981. Meld deg på denne turen nå, og bli med på "norsk" fest i Albuquerque når Indian Summer og Route 66 gruppene møtes på hotellet i Albuquerque. Begrenset antall på denne turen.




“Indian Summer- Land of Enchantment and Canyons”.

 A 10 day motorcycle ride through New Mexico, Colorado Utah and Arizona.



Day 1Albuquerque to Taos - 160 miles

From Albuquerque we ride east on old Route 66 to the little village of Tijeras where we take NM14 north to Santa Fe. On the way we’ll stop in Madrid, an old mining town and watering hole. NM 14 is a great first day ride with sweeping turns and breathtaking views. New Mexico is the “Land of Enchantment”. We’ll cruise into the heart of Santa Fe, legendary western town and the capitol of New Mexico.
The last leg of the day takes us north through Espanola, up trough the Rio Grande Canyon to Taos.

Day 2 Rest day in Taos

Day 3 - Taos to Gunnison - 227 miles

From Taos we turn west on NM 64 across the Rio Grande Gorge bridge  towards Tres Piedras where we  join NM285 north to Alamosa,CO. We are riding through the San Loius Valley with the Sangre De Cristo Mountains to the east and the San Juan Mountains to the west. Highway 17 north to  Poncha Spring takes us closer to the Rocky Mountains and we get a good view of the majestic peaks as we turn west on CO50 and ride through beautiful Southern Colorado along the Gunnison River to the town of Gunnison.

Day 4 - Gunnison to Monticello - 196 miles

From Gunnison we head west on HWY 50 along the Blue Mesa Reservoir and a taste of the “real “ west  towards Montrose.  We may  take a detour up CO 92 to Black Canyon, but our route is west on CO90 and  we make our way through the spectacular Uncompahgre National Forest . CO 90 is a highway that winds through some of the most desolate country of Colorado's southwest. The highway begins in Montrose and snakes through the remote mountain and canyon lands around Monticello, CO.

 Day 5 – Monticello to Torrey - 195 miles.

We start the day in Monticello and turn south towards Blanding,Utah on Highway 191. Then west on Highway 95 through  Natural Bridges National Monument  and a fun and spectacular ride through sweeping turns at  White Canyon and on to Hanksville . At Hanksville we'll start the last leg of the day to Torrey where we'll spend the night.

Day 6 - Torrey to Fredonia - 192 miles

includes a stretch of road that has been called one of the ten best motorcycle rides in the US. From Torrey we had south on HWY12 towards Boulder and this is where the real fun begins.  Riding through the Escalante National Forest is magical and Bryce National Park follows in equal splendor.

Day 7 - Fredonia to Williams -  254miles

From Fredonia we head south on AZ89A. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is almost 1000 feet higher up then the south rim. The first leg of today's stretch begins on the north rim and we drop 1000 feet to end up riding along the South Rim and on to Williams, AZ .

Day 9 - Williams to Show Low - 235 miles

Today's ride will cover a lot of different landscapes and take us through a diverse part of Arizona. Sedona is a "New Age" town famous for its artist, spiritual retreats and spectacular nature. From Sedona we ride east through the high desert  to Camp Verde up into into the  mountains  to Payson.  Highway 260 east from Payson to Heber and Show Low goes through Sitgreaves National Forest. Large areas along today’s route were devastated by wildfires in the summer of 2011

Day 10 - Show Low to Albuquerque - 243 miles

From Show Low we ride north / east throughout he eastern edges of the White Mountains towards   El Malpais National Monument. This is ancient native American country and we take the time to visit  Acoma Pueblo  before we continue east on I-40 to Albuquerque.

Morten Nilssen moved to the USA in 1979 and has lived in Taos, New Mexico since 1981. Married with two children he established Moondance Recording Studio in Taos which recorded over 90 albums before it was sold in 1993. Since then he worked in the New Mexico film industry as executive director for Taos Talking Pictures and later as a film location consultant. He has traveled the southwest USA by car and motorcycle for many years and knows the area better than most. Currently he rides a Triump Sprint which has clocked over 8000 miles over the years on the highways we are traveling on this ride.
